Two pool services can quote the same monthly price and deliver very different things. The difference is rarely visible on day one. It shows up three months in, as a surprise charge, a missed week or a pool that is slowly going cloudy.
These seven questions get you a straight comparison before you sign up with anyone.
1. What exactly does the monthly price cover?
Get a list. The items worth asking about by name are chemicals, filter cleans and salt cell cleaning, because they are easy to assume are covered. A price only means something once you know what is inside it.
2. What happens at each visit?
A complete weekly visit has four parts:
- Cleaning: the surface skimmed, the walls, steps and tile line brushed, the floor vacuumed, and the skimmer baskets, pump basket and cleaner bag emptied.
- Water: tested, with the readings recorded, and balanced with whatever the pool needs that day.
- Equipment: the pump, filter and heater looked over, the timer or automation schedule checked, and O-rings inspected.
- A report: so you know all of the above happened.
If any of those four is missing, ask why.
3. How will I know they came?
You should not have to wonder. Ask whether you get a report after each visit, and what is in it. Arrival time, before-and-after photos, the water readings and the chemicals added are a reasonable minimum. It is the difference between trusting that the work was done and seeing it.
4. Who is checking the technician’s work?
One person servicing dozens of pools a week will miss something eventually. Ask whether anyone reviews the visit reports, and what happens when a reading looks off or a part is wearing out. The best answer is that someone catches it and calls you, before you notice anything yourself.
5. Will it be the same person each week?
A technician who sees your pool every week learns its equipment and its habits. Ask whether you get the same technician, and whether your service day stays the same.
6. What if the pool turns green?
It can happen to any pool. What matters is who pays to fix it. Ask the question directly and get the answer in writing.
7. Am I locked in?
Ask whether there is a contract, how you cancel, and whether there is any kind of refund if the first month does not go well.
How Ripple answers these
For what it is worth, here are our answers.
- One monthly price covers everything: all chemicals with no per-dose charges, phosphate treatment, liquid algaecide and clarifier, filter cleans, salt cell cleaning and small O-ring replacement.
- Every visit includes the cleaning, water, equipment and report steps above.
- You get a photo report after each visit, with timestamps, readings and what was added.
- Service managers review the reports daily and contact you with a plan if something needs attention.
- Same technician every week. We assign your service day based on our routes, and it stays the same.
- No Green Guarantee: if your pool turns green on our watch, we clear it for free.
- No contract. Service is month to month, with a 30-day refund.
Whoever you hire, ask the seven questions. A good pool service will be glad you did.
